Taiwan by train

High-speed rail, TRA trains, tickets, stations and practical advice for Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien, Taitung and beyond.

Taiwan is easy to cross by rail, but the network is not one railway. High-speed trains dominate the west coast, conventional TRA trains reach the east coast and smaller cities, and several HSR stations sit outside the city centers they serve.

The first decision

THSR or TRA?

Use Taiwan High Speed Rail for fast west-coast travel. Use Taiwan Railway for Hualien, Taitung, smaller stations and many city-center connections.

Choosing the wrong system can add more time than the train saves, especially when the high-speed station is outside the city.

Compare the railways →

Let the railway be part of the destination

Some of Taiwan’s most memorable rail moments happen beyond the high-speed main line.

Which railway do you need?

The useful distinction is not “fast train or slow train.” It is which network reaches your destination and where that network leaves you.

THSRWest coast

Taiwan High Speed Rail

Best for fast travel between the major west-coast cities.

  • Taipei → Taichung
  • Taipei → Chiayi
  • Taipei → Tainan
  • Taipei → Zuoying / Kaohsiung

THSR is built for speed, but many stations are outside the historic or commercial city center.

TRAIsland-wide

Taiwan Railway

The conventional national railway for the east coast and smaller towns.

  • Taipei → Hualien
  • Taipei → Taitung

  • City-center and local journeys

TRA covers far more places and reaches destinations that high-speed rail does not.

Why this matters →

Before you board

Seven things to know before taking a train in Taiwan

Most first-time mistakes happen before the train arrives: wrong system, wrong station or wrong booking assumption.

01

THSR and TRA are different systems

They have different trains, tickets, station networks and booking systems. Many cities have both, not always at the same station.

02

HSR may not be downtown

Taichung, Chiayi and Tainan are important examples. Check the onward transfer before assuming you will walk from the platform to your hotel.

03

Hualien and Taitung are TRA journeys

High-speed rail does not continue around the east coast. Reserved TRA express services matter most here.

04

Reserved trains can sell out

Popular east-coast and intercity services are harder to book around weekends, holidays and peak travel periods.

05

Tickets open weeks ahead

TRA reservations generally open 28 days before travel; THSR reserved tickets generally open 29 days ahead. Special periods can differ.

06

EasyCard is not a universal reservation

Stored-value cards are useful for urban transport and eligible TRA journeys. They do not replace a reserved seat on every express service.

07

Taipei Main is a complex

TRA, THSR, Taipei MRT and Airport MRT connections sit around one large interchange. Give yourself time the first time you use it.

How to reach Alishan by train

Taipei or another city → Chiayi → Alishan Forest Railway and/or bus → Alishan.

THSR Chiayi and TRA Chiayi are different stops. The Forest Railway departs from Chiayi’s Beimen-side railway context, and current operations can vary by line, weather and maintenance.

  2. Check the Forest Railway. The official site publishes current main-line and branch-line timetables.
  3. Keep a road option. Bus or road transport may be the practical continuation when a full rail section is not running.

Stored valueTap-in is conditional

EasyCard and iPASS are useful, but do not assume a seat or eligibility on every train.

Everyday questions

EasyCard, seat type and Taiwan PASS

The short answer is “it depends on the service.” The practical answer is below.

Can you use EasyCard or iPASS?

They are excellent for MRT and local transport. TRA’s current stored-value rules exclude Taroko, Puyuma, EMU3000 / Tze-Chiang 3000, business cars and other designated services. If a specific seat and departure matter, book the train.

Reserved or non-reserved?

For THSR, non-reserved can work on flexible off-peak travel, but you may stand. For long journeys, weekends, holidays and east-coast TRA express trains, reserve when the departure matters.

Is Taiwan PASS worth it?

In 2026 the official product has HSR and TR editions. It can make sense when you will use several included rail and local-transport products inside the validity period. Individual tickets are simpler for one or two intercity legs or a changing itinerary.

What should most tourists buy?

For a long west-coast trip, standard reserved THSR is usually the simplest default. For Hualien, Taitung or a smaller city, choose the TRA service that reaches the right station and reserve if the timing matters.

Train time ≠ travel time

02

Confirm the station

At Taipei Main, follow the operator signs.

04

Check train and car

Match the train number, platform and car.

05

Board and settle

Reserved seat? Find the car and seat printed on the ticket.

Luggage

Keep aisles clear and allow extra time for elevators and station transfers. Practical handling depends on the train and station, so check formal rules before carrying unusually large items.

Food, power and Wi‑Fi

THSR publishes Wi‑Fi and charging details. TRA amenities vary by train type. Bring water and do not assume every carriage has the same fittings.

Which side to sit?

For ordinary journeys, a window seat matters more than a universal “best side.” East-coast seat-side guidance is train and direction specific.

Clear answers

Frequently asked questions

Short answers for the decisions that cause the most confusion.

What is the difference between THSR and TRA?

THSR is the high-speed west-coast railway. TRA is the conventional national railway serving the east coast, smaller towns and more city-center stations.

Does high-speed rail go to Hualien?

No. Hualien is a TRA destination.

Does high-speed rail go to Taitung?

No. Taitung is reached by TRA, with flights also possible depending on the itinerary.

Which train should I take Taipei → Taichung?

Usually THSR if the HSR station and onward transfer fit your hotel. TRA can be more convenient for a city-center arrival.

Which train should I take Taipei → Tainan?

Usually THSR from Taipei, then continue from HSR Tainan by the Shalun branch, bus or taxi.

Which train should I take Taipei → Kaohsiung?

Take THSR to Zuoying, then continue by Kaohsiung MRT, TRA or taxi according to your destination.

How do I get from Taipei to Hualien?

Use TRA. Look for a reserved express service when the departure matters.

How early can I book TRA?

Most reserved TRA tickets open four weeks, or 28 days, before the travel date. Special Friday and holiday rules can change the exact opening pattern.

How early can I book THSR?

Reserved THSR tickets generally open 29 days before travel. Holiday periods can have adjusted announcements.

Can foreigners book with a passport?

Yes. TRA’s English booking guidance allows foreign visitors to enter a passport number. Follow the current booking form instructions.

Can I use EasyCard on TRA?

Sometimes. Current stored-value rules exclude several reserved or designated services, including Taroko, Puyuma, EMU3000 and business cars.

Can I use EasyCard on THSR?

Do not treat EasyCard as a general THSR ticket. Buy the THSR ticket or pass that matches your service.

Do I need a reserved seat?

Not always. For long trips, weekends, holidays and east-coast express trains, reserve when the departure matters.

What is non-reserved seating?

You buy a date-valid ticket without a train or seat assignment and use the designated non-reserved cars. A seat is not guaranteed.

Which TRA trains require reservations?

Reserved express and designated services can require a reservation or have no tap-in alternative. Check the current service rules before boarding.

Is Taiwan PASS worth it?

It can be useful when multiple included rail and local-transport products line up with your itinerary. Individual tickets are simpler for one or two intercity rides.

Is Taichung HSR station downtown?

No. It is at Xinwuri, separate from Taichung TRA station in the city center.

Is Tainan HSR station downtown?

No. It is in Gueiren, outside the historic center.

Where does THSR arrive in Kaohsiung?

THSR ends at Zuoying. The interchange also uses the names New Zuoying / Xinzuoying in different contexts.

How do I get to Alishan by train?

Travel to Chiayi, then continue using the Alishan Forest Railway and/or road transport based on current operation and availability.

How much luggage can I bring?

Practical luggage handling depends on train and station. Keep aisles clear and check the operator’s current size rules for unusually large bags.

Are there toilets?

Long-distance trains generally have toilets, but fittings and accessibility vary by train type and carriage.

Is there Wi-Fi?

THSR publishes onboard Wi‑Fi information. Do not assume the same service on every TRA train.

Are there power outlets?

Power and charging features vary by train type. THSR publishes carriage amenities; check TRA service details for your train.

Can I bring food?

Food is practical on long-distance trains, but keep the carriage clean and follow posted rules. Metro rules are different.

How early should I arrive?

Arrive earlier the first time, especially at Taipei Main or when changing between a metro, Airport MRT and intercity train.

Are trains punctual?

Plan around the published schedule, but keep a transfer buffer for weather, maintenance and station walks.

Can trains sell out?

Yes. Popular reserved services can be difficult around weekends, holidays and peak periods.

Is Taipei Main Station difficult?

It is a large transport complex with several operators and underground passages. Follow the operator and line signs, not only the station name.

Train or bus?

THSR normally wins for west-coast speed. For east-coast travel, TRA is often the practical rail option. Alishan is a combined journey.

Is the east coast scenic?

It can be, especially on parts of the TRA east-coast route, but weather and seat direction affect what you see. Plan the connection first.

Can I travel around Taiwan entirely by train?

You can cover a large part of Taiwan by rail, but Alishan and some mountain or rural destinations need a bus, taxi or other last-mile connection.

City accessDepends heavily on the station; HSR may sit outside the center. Some services reach central districts more directly.
FrequencyVery high on major corridors; more limited on the east coast.Strong on many intercity routes, but check the operator and stop.
ReservationDepends on train and service type.Depends on the operator and inventory.
LuggageCarry or store onboard.Often stored under the coach.
TrafficRail avoids road congestion. Can be delayed by traffic and weather.
DestinationsLimited to the rail network.Reaches places without rail.
Best forMajor rail corridors and east-coast TRA journeys.Non-rail destinations and some more central city links.
Taipei → Taichung

Train usually wins

THSR is fastest for time-sensitive trips. A bus can still make sense when its terminal is closer to your hotel or price matters more.

Taipei → Tainan

Train is stronger for time

THSR is much faster, but the Gueiren station transfer matters. A bus is slower and road traffic can change the arrival time, though its stop may be more useful.

Taipei → Kaohsiung

Compare total arrival time

THSR to Zuoying is usually the speed choice. A long-distance bus takes longer but can serve a central district directly, depending on its terminal.

Taipei → Hualien

TRA is the natural rail option

Use TRA for the east coast. Road geography and bus patterns differ, so do not assume a regular intercity bus is automatically competitive.

Taipei → Jiufen

Bus complements the train

Take TRA to Ruifang, then continue uphill by local bus or taxi. A bus is the last mile, not a replacement for the whole rail plan.

When a bus makes more sense

  • the destination has no railway
  • the bus stop is much closer to your hotel
  • a direct service avoids a station transfer
  • you are connecting to Sun Moon Lake or another non-rail destination

When the train usually wins

  • Taipei → Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung when time matters
  • Taipei → Hualien, where TRA is the natural rail route
  • Hualien → Taitung, when a reserved east-coast seat fits
  • any day when road traffic would break a tight plan

Small decisions, fewer surprises

Ticket and transfer rules worth knowing

The useful answer is often a rule about stations, reservations or last-mile transport.

01

Book the departure that matters

THSR reservations generally open 29 days ahead; TRA reservations generally open 28 days ahead. Friday and holiday patterns can add exceptions.

02

EasyCard is not universal

Stored-value rules exclude several reserved or designated services, including Taroko, Puyuma, EMU3000 and business cars. Check before tapping.

03

Passport booking is possible

TRA’s English guidance supports foreign visitors using a passport number. Keep the document used for the booking available at collection or inspection.

04

Sold out does not mean impossible

Try a different departure, a nearby station, non-reserved THSR where suitable, or a road transfer. Keep the route and the arrival promise separate.

05

Compare Taiwan PASS carefully

2026 products include HSR and TR editions. A pass only wins when its included transport matches your actual days and destinations.

06

Business class is a choice

Standard reserved is the sensible default for most trips. Compare the business supplement with the quiet, space and service you actually need.

More booking questions

Before you click buy

Four practical questions that sit between a route search and a good travel day.

Can I buy a ticket on the same day?

Sometimes, if seats remain. Same-day availability is not a planning strategy for popular east-coast express trains; check the operator as soon as your date is known.

What should I do if my preferred train is sold out?

Try another departure, a different service type, or a nearby interchange. For THSR, non-reserved cars may be useful when the route and timing allow; for TRA, do not assume every train accepts tap-in travel.

Can I use EasyCard on EMU3000 or Puyuma?

Current TRA stored-value guidance excludes EMU3000 and Puyuma. Buy a valid reserved ticket instead of boarding on the assumption that a tap will work.

Is there a direct train to Alishan, Sun Moon Lake or Jiufen?

No. Alishan needs a Chiayi connection plus Forest Railway or road travel; Sun Moon Lake uses a rail gateway plus bus or road; Jiufen uses TRA to Ruifang plus bus or taxi.
